Weekly DeFi Data Report — September 28–October 4, 2026

A full week-over-week read on multi-chain DeFi: TVL, DEX volume, stablecoin supply, fees and capital turnover across seven chains, with cross-chain scorecards, an anomaly screen and trailing four-week comparison.

Weekly DeFi Data Report2026-10-0411 min readDefiinger Research Desk2508 words

We publish the same metric set every week so you can compare chains on equal footing instead of reading seven separate dashboards. This edition covers the seven days ending Sunday 4 October 2026.

Every figure below is derived from one shared dataset pulled from DefiLlama's public API, so the numbers in this report cannot disagree with the news review or the intelligence briefing published the same week. Stock metrics (TVL, stablecoin supply) are Sunday snapshots; flow metrics (DEX volume, fees) are weekly totals.

Quick answer

Which chain earned the most network fees during the week of Sep 28 - Oct 4, 2026? Solana, for the third consecutive week: $111.7m in weekly fees, down 1.8% from $113.7m, earned on TVL that eased 1.5% to $6.52bn. The week as a whole was a consolidation week: network fees held at $243.8M (+0.2%) for a second straight week at the elevated level, DEX volume slipped 0.8% to $43.64B, total TVL dipped 0.4% to $79.57B — the first weekly decline in seven weeks — and the stablecoin float rebounded 0.5% to $284.82B after three consecutive weekly declines. Blended turnover was essentially flat at 0.55x.

Arbitrum$1.4B1.8%-2.8%$1.4B-0.9%
Optimism$0.5B0.6%+0.0%$0.5B+6.5%

The quietest breadth week in the sample: every chain's move sat between -2.8% and +1.6%. Base (+1.6%) and TRON (+0.4%) grew, Optimism was flat, and Ethereum (-0.5%), BNB Chain (-0.2%), Solana (-1.5%) and Arbitrum (-2.8%) eased. After six weeks in which the aggregate rose, a 0.4% give-back spread thinly across the sample is consolidation, not a reversal — the aggregate remains above every weekly reading before mid-September.

2 TVL trend, last six weeks

Six-week trend, 2026-08-30 to 2026-10-04.
Chain2026-08-302026-09-062026-09-132026-09-202026-09-272026-10-04

Optimism$0.4B$0.4B$0.4B$0.5B$0.5B$0.5B

The trend table now shows the full shape: a stair-step of six growth weeks stacked on the late-August plateau, and then a flat tick at the end. Ethereum's row eased from its $53.54bn high but holds the two highest readings in the window. The question the trend poses is whether the plateau is forming a base or a ceiling, and one flat week cannot answer it.

3 DEX spot volume and turnover

Weekly DEX spot volume, share of total, and turnover (volume / TVL).
ChainDEX volShareW/WTurnoverRank
Ethereum$9.4B21.6%-10.3%0.182
TRON$0.3B0.7%-3.1%0.057

Base$8.3B19.0%+28.1%1.303
Arbitrum$1.1B2.5%-34.0%0.765
Optimism$0.8B1.9%+260.9%1.696

Volume was a reshuffle rather than a move. The three gainers were the smaller venues: Base jumped 28.1% to $8.30bn, BNB Chain 13.8% to $7.41bn, and Optimism 260.9% to $0.83bn — the week's largest relative move on the sample's smallest base. The three largest venues all fell: Arbitrum dropped 34.0% to $1.07bn, Solana eased 11.1% to $16.28bn, and Ethereum slipped 10.3% to $9.44bn. TRON dipped 3.1%. The gains and losses nearly cancelled, and the aggregate moved just 0.8%.

Solana remains the largest single venue at roughly 1.7 times Ethereum's weekly volume, and its turnover sits at 2.50x — capital turned over about two and a half times a week against Ethereum's 0.18x. The ordering of the turnover table did not change this week; the levels barely moved.

4 DEX volume trend, last six weeks

Six-week trend, 2026-08-30 to 2026-10-04.
Chain2026-08-302026-09-062026-09-132026-09-202026-09-272026-10-04

Optimism$0.2B$0.2B$0.2B$0.2B$0.2B$0.8B

Two consecutive weeks near $43.6-44.0bn make this the flattest two-week stretch for volume since the September rise began. The reshuffle inside the aggregate matters more than its level: Base's $8.30bn now sits above even its late-August surge peak of $7.74bn, while Arbitrum's has given back most of the month's gains in one week.

5 Stablecoin supply by chain

Stablecoin supply held on each chain, week ending 2026-10-04.
ChainStablecoinsShareW/WRank
Ethereum$146.9B51.6%-0.4%1
TRON$94.3B33.1%+1.6%2

Solana$16.8B5.9%+0.5%4
Base$5.2B1.8%+2.2%5
Arbitrum$4.1B1.4%+7.3%6
Optimism$0.6B0.2%+1.8%7

Float expanded 0.5% to $284.82bn — the first weekly increase in four weeks, ending the longest drain in our sample. TRON swung from -1.3% to +1.6% ($94.30bn), doing the most good this week after doing the most damage last week. Arbitrum added 7.3% to $4.11bn, Base 2.2% and Optimism 1.8%, while Solana (+0.5%) and BNB Chain (+0.4%) nudged up. Ethereum was the only decliner, easing 0.4% to $146.93bn.

The reversal does not close the drain question — one week answers a trend question in neither direction — but it changes the burden of proof. The September story was three declines concentrated first in Solana, then TRON; this week six of seven chains grew float, which is a broader move than the decline was.

6 Stablecoin concentration

Ranked stablecoin supply; the top two chains dominate.

5Base$5.2B1.8%
6Arbitrum$4.1B1.4%
7Optimism$0.6B0.2%

Ethereum and TRON together hold 84.7% of the float in our sample — effectively unchanged. What changed is the direction inside the pair: TRON up 1.6%, Ethereum down 0.4%.

7 Network fees

Weekly network fees and fee yield relative to TVL.
ChainFeesW/WShareFees / TVL
Ethereum$83.9M-2.7%34.4%0.157

Arbitrum$5.8M-19.4%2.4%0.411
Optimism$2.4M+200.0%1.0%0.490

Fees held at $243.8M, up just 0.2% — the second consecutive week at the elevated level. Solana led at $111.7m (-1.8%) on TVL that eased 1.5%, so its fee intensity per dollar locked held near its sample-high level. Ethereum earned $83.9m (-2.7%). The week's fee story was BNB Chain: +27.8% to $25.3m, its strongest week in three, landing the same week its volume rose 13.8% after two weeks of unwinding.

The structural gap is unchanged: Solana earns about $17.1 of fees per $1,000 of TVL against Ethereum's $1.57 — roughly eleven times. Optimism's +200% to $2.4m and Arbitrum's -19.4% are small-base moves in both directions; the fee table at this end of the sample measures noise, not trend.

8 Turnover and capital efficiency

Capital efficiency by chain: how many times TVL turned over during the week, and weekly fees earned per unit of TVL. Both are derived from DefiLlama volume, TVL and fee series.
ChainTurnover (vol / TVL)W/WWeekly fees / TVL
Solana2.50x-9.8%1.713%
Optimism1.69x+260.9%0.490%
Base1.30x+26.1%0.203%
BNB Chain1.27x+14.0%0.434%
Arbitrum0.76x-32.1%0.411%
Ethereum0.18x-9.8%0.157%
TRON0.05x-3.5%0.032%

Blended turnover held at 0.55x — essentially flat at -0.5%, the first week since early September it did not fall meaningfully. With fees flat and volume flat, the flat ratio is the arithmetically honest outcome; the five-week slide in turnover has paused rather than turned.

The dispersion across chains remains enormous: Solana turns its TVL over 2.50 times a week against Ethereum's 0.18. Neither moved enough this week to change the gap.

9 Composite scorecard

Composite ranking across five dimensions; lower average rank is stronger.
ChainTVLDEXStablesFeesTurnoverAvg rank

BNB Chain443343.6
Base335433.6
Arbitrum656555.4
TRON572775.6
Optimism767625.6

The scorecard splits the sample the way the week actually behaved: Base and BNB Chain top the table on volume-plus-float breadth, Solana and Ethereum hold the fee leadership with softer deposits, and Arbitrum sits at the bottom as the only chain whose float grew while its trading fell away.

The screen's two strongest readings are both volume lines: Optimism at +21.4 and Base at +5.7 against their own four-week baselines. Optimism's is a small-base effect — $0.83bn against a $0.20bn baseline — landing the same week as the Velodrome-Aerodrome merger announcement, which is correlation, not attribution. Base's is genuine growth at scale. Both are screens, not findings; the merger's launch date of 21 October is the measurable event ahead.

13 Deep dive: the three chains that moved the week

The three chains that shaped this week's aggregate numbers.

Arbitrum$1.4BTrading and floatLargest stablecoin float gain of the week (+7.3%)Volume fell 34.0% and fees 19.4% — whether the float stays

Reading the sample through these three: Optimism is the momentum story that needs a second week before it is a story at all, Base did the most complete work — deposits, volume and float all up — and Arbitrum is the week's contradiction, the best float growth sitting on the worst volume decline. If the float is capital arriving ahead of trading, Arbitrum is the chart that tests the idea.

14 Limitations of this report

  • TVL can double-count recursive strategies, so treat levels as approximate and compare week-over-week changes rather than absolute values.
  • DEX volume data comes from venue-reported series; wash trading is filtered inconsistently across chains.
  • Stablecoin supply counts tokens resident on chain, which is not the same as economic ownership by users there.
  • Network fee figures exclude application-level revenue, so chains hosting large application take-rates may be understated.
  • A single base chain can move the ecosystem aggregate; always read the per-chain rows alongside the totals.

15 Formulas used in this report

W/W % = ( ( current / previous ) - 1 ) x 100
Share % = ( chain metric / ecosystem total ) x 100
4-wk baseline = mean( value over the 4 weeks before the current week )
z-score = ( current - 4-wk baseline ) / stdev( 4-wk baseline ); |z| > 2 = anomaly
Turnover = weekly DEX volume / TVL (dimensionless; higher = more active capital)

16 What this means

The honest summary is that the week consolidated every line the series has been tracking. Fees held at $243.8M for a second week — the divergence question from last week resolved as 'neither side reverted', which reads as a new operating level for fees against soft volume. TVL gave back 0.4%, its first down week in seven, on moves so small that the sample's largest chain decline was 2.8%. Turnover paused at 0.55x.

The stablecoin line is where the story moved. Three September declines raised a structural question about the float that funds trading; this week's +0.5% rise, led by the same TRON that led the drain and joined by the widest breadth since August, does not close that question but reverses its direction. If the float keeps growing while volume stays soft, the next divergence to watch is capital arriving faster than it is being used.

For anyone allocating rather than trading, the fee level is now the anchor measurement. Two weeks at $243m-244m says the networks' revenue base reset higher in late September; the open question is whether that level survives the first quiet fortnight without an event behind it. The yield column's lending rates are the downstream readout of the same utilisation this report measures.

Key Takeaways

  • TVL slipped 0.4% to $79.57B — the first weekly decline in seven weeks, with every chain's move between -2.8% and +1.6%.
  • Network fees held at $243.8M (+0.2%) for a second straight week while DEX volume eased 0.8% to $43.64B — the divergence resolved by not resolving.
  • Stablecoin float rebounded 0.5% to $284.82B after three consecutive weekly declines; TRON flipped from -1.3% to +1.6% and Arbitrum added 7.3%.
  • Optimism posted the week's largest relative moves — DEX volume +260.9%, fees +200% — on the smallest bases, the same week as the Velodrome-Aerodrome merger announcement.
  • BNB Chain fees jumped 27.8% to $25.3m as its volume grew 13.8%; Solana kept the fee lead at $111.7m (-1.8%).
  • Blended turnover held at 0.55x — essentially flat, pausing the five-week slide.

17 The week in brief

This was the week the divergence resolved — by not resolving. Last week we asked which side of the fee/volume split would revert: volume catching up, or fees falling back. Neither happened. Fees landed at $243.8M for a second consecutive week (+0.2%), volume eased 0.8% to $43.64B, and blended turnover held at 0.55x. Two readings near $243m against soft volume now look less like an event spike and more like a new operating level.

The deposit side tipped gently. Total TVL slipped 0.4% to $79.57B — the first weekly decline since the week ending 16 August, and a small one. Two chains grew (Base +1.6% to $6.37bn, TRON +0.4% to $5.67bn), Optimism was flat, and the other four gave back between 0.2% and 2.8%. Ethereum's -0.5% left it at $53.28bn, the second-highest reading in the sample after last week's high.

The stablecoin float did what it had refused to do for three weeks: rise. The aggregate gained 0.5% to $284.82B, the first weekly increase in four weeks. The reversal was led by TRON — from -1.3% last week to +1.6% — with Arbitrum adding 7.3%, the largest float gain of any chain this week. The drain we tracked through September reversed rather than confirmed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What date range does this report cover?
Monday 28 September to Sunday 4 October 2026. Stock metrics are the Sunday snapshot; flow metrics cover the full seven days.
How should I compare this week with last week?
Use the per-chain rows. The aggregate moved less than 1% on every line, and the interesting changes this week are inside the totals.
Did the fee spike from last week hold?
Yes. Fees landed at $243.8M against $243.4m last week — a second consecutive week at the elevated level, which reads more like a new operating level than event traffic. Whether it survives a third quiet week is the watch item.
Why did TVL fall after six up weeks?
The decline was 0.4% in aggregate, spread thinly: four chains eased between 0.2% and 2.8% while two grew. One flat week after a six-week rise is consolidation, not a reversal — the aggregate still sits above every weekly reading before mid-September.
What exactly is capital turnover?
Weekly DEX volume divided by TVL. It measures how many times the value locked on a chain changed hands during the week, and it is the cleanest single measure of whether capital is being used or parked.
Are these figures revised after publication?
Yes, occasionally. DefiLlama restates recent history as venues report late data, so a published week can shift slightly. We reconcile against the same snapshot across every column so all pages move together.
